On March 28, a Georgian-language Facebook account published a video showing a tunnel loaded with gold bars. The post mentions that the tunnel is approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) long and connects the Vatican City and Jerusalem, and also claims that gold is stored in the tunnel at a height of 13 meters.

Russian and Georgian-speaking Facebook users (1, 2, 3, 4) have been disseminating similar claims in the past years as well.

The claim that the Vatican City and Jerusalem are connected by a tunnel full of gold is without evidence. Similar information has been spread in the past, and the video is being circulated by unauthentic or suspicious accounts and was linked to different cities.

Information about the tunnel connecting the Vatican City and Jerusalem has been circulating for years now. According to these claims, there is a secret tunnel full of gold bars from the Vatican City to Jerusalem. It is 2,400 kilometers long and contains so much gold that it would take 650 cargo planes to transport it. There is a post on X (formerly Twitter), according to which the same tunnel now connects the Vatican and the Hawaiian island of Maui.

By using Google Maps it was determined that the distance from the Vatican City to Jerusalem is much greater than 2400 kilometers, as it is mentioned in the posts. If there is an underground tunnel from the Vatican to Jerusalem, it must cross several European and Middle Eastern countries. With one of the routes, the tunnel should pass through the territory of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Syria, or it should be under the Mediterranean Sea. If the tunnel connecting the Vatican and Jerusalem were to be underground, it would not be 2,400 kilometers long, but about 4,050 kilometers long. On Google Maps, two more land and partly sea routes from the Vatican to Jerusalem are proposed, one is 3,543 kilometers long, the other is 4,827 kilometers long.

Information about the tunnel connecting the Vatican and Jerusalem has been circulating for a long time. According to claims, there is a secret tunnel full of gold bars from the Vatican to Jerusalem. It is 2,400 kilometers long and contains so much gold that it would take 650 cargo planes to transport it. There is a post on X (formerly Samoer), according to which the same tunnel now connects the Vatican and the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Using Google maps, it was established that the distance from the Vatican to Jerusalem is much greater than the distance – 2400 kilometers, which is mentioned in the information spread. If there is an underground tunnel from the Vatican to Jerusalem, it must cross several European and Central Asian countries. With one of the routes, the tunnel should pass through the territory of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Syria, or it should be under the Mediterranean Sea.

In 2021, the fact-checking service of the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) verified claims about a tunnel connecting the Vatican City and Jerusalem. The publication wondered how feasible it is to build a tunnel even 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) long. DPA compares the Vatican-Jerusalem tunnel to the Gotthard (Switzerland) base tunnel, which is the world’s longest railway tunnel. The publication refers to the laws of nature and writes that ventilation is always a major problem in both mines and other tunnels. Two powerful and state-of-the-art ventilation centers are available in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, and the tunnel is designed in such a way that air is constantly drawn in by the moving trains. If there was a tunnel connecting the Vatican and Jerusalem, it would be 40 times longer than the Gotthard tunnel, and there would be serious problems with oxygen and ventilation both during its construction and later during its use.

Reliable media outlets, including the news portal of the Holy See, do not write anything about the alleged discovery of a large amount of gold in a tunnel on the territory of the Vatican. The distributed video cannot be found in open sources.

Information related to secret tunnels is often disseminated to amplify conspiracy theories. “Myth Detector” has verified some of the similar suspicious claims in the past as well. For more details, see:
