On September 2, a Russian-language Facebook account published a quote attributed to former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, which reads: “We will reduce the population of Russia to 15-25 million. That will be enough to maintain the oil and gas pipeline.”

The quote attributed to Madeleine Albright, as if she would reduce the Russian population, is a fake. No identical or similar statement by Albright can be found in open, reliable sources, while a similar false quote has been attributed to Margaret Thatcher in the past.

The quote attributed to Madeleine Albright is a fake

The quote attributed to the former U.S. Secretary of State can be found on a Russian-language forum since 2018. It is not confirmed by any open and reliable sources that Madeleine Albright has ever made a statement of this kind.

It is worth noting that the same quote was previously attributed to the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher. In 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an article was published by Georgia & World containing a number of alleged quotes by British and American politicians and public figures against Russians. The article referred to statements made by Russian political analyst Sergey Mikheev on Radio Vesti, and the quote, this time associated with Madeleine Albright, was then attributed to Margaret Thatcher.
