On June 13, 2023, a Georgian-language Facebook account published a video showing a man impersonating Adolf Hitler being greeted by people on the street, taking photos with him and giving him the Nazi salute. According to the author of the post, this is how ordinary people meet the “resurrected Hitler” in Europe.
The disseminated post is a video manipulation. In fact, the footage is cut from the 2015 satirical film (Look Who’s Back) and does not show the reaction of regular Europeans to the actor portraying Hitler.
The disseminated post creates the impression as if the video was taken in some European country, and the person walking around in a Hitler costume and makeup is met with happiness by everyone. In fact, the leaked footage is cut from the 2015 film “Look Who’s Back,” which is a German-language satirical comedy based on the 2012 book of the same name by Timur Vermes.
The plot of the film takes place in Berlin in the 21st century. Adolf Hitler wakes up in a park in Berlin in 2014, although he doesn’t know its 2014 and sees events from the perspective of World War II. People take pictures with him because they think he is an actor playing Hitler. However, one of the women, annoyed by him, sprays Hitler with pepper spray.
In the film, Adolf Hitler meets recently fired director Fabian Sawatzki, who thinks Hitler is an actor and promises to film him for a television program. Hitler and Sawatzki travel to different parts of Germany; Hitler perceives this as a chance to regain his popularity and power, talks to the Germans and promises to solve their problems.
