On November 18, 2023, the Russian-language Facebook page “Media Station” published a video discussing aliens and unidentified flying objects. The author claims that in July 1947, an unidentified flying object crashed in the city of Roswell, New Mexico, while the US Special Service was able to capture one of the living aliens and hide him. The video tells the story of how it was possible to make contact with extraterrestrials, then how 12 employees from “Area 51” were sent to the planet “Serpo,” which is located between two suns and there is a habitable space for humans.

The story about the alien spaceship crashing in Roswell and the connection of the US to the planet Serpo is a conspiracy theory. In fact, it was a US surveillance balloon that crashed in the city in 1947, but regardless of the explanation, the incident has given rise to endless conspiracy theories.

The video tells the story of how on April 24, 1964, a ship of aliens living on the planet “Serpo” landed on Earth, and 16 high-ranking people of the US, including President Lyndon Johnson, had communicated with those who landed. Also, the author claims that after selection and training, 12 people were sent to the planet, 2 of them died, 2 stayed on “Serpo” to live, and 8 returned after 13 years. None of the facts mentioned in the video are confirmed by reliable and open sources. Instead, foreign publications cover the incident as a case that gave rise to conspiracy theories (1;2;3). The said narrative has no specific source. The author of the video promises to continue the “interesting story” in the next episodes.

In 1947 in New Mexico there really was an incident known as the Roswell incident. At first, the US military said the debris was a “flying disc,” fueling conspiracy theories. It was later clarified that a high-altitude balloon had crashed at the site, but the clarification failed to stop conspiracy theories. In 1994, it was finally revealed that the debris actually belonged to a surveillance balloon that was part of the classified US project Mogul, which was designed to detect and monitor Soviet nuclear bomb tests. In 1997, the Air Force’s final report, “The Roswell Report: Case Closed,” suggested that the claim that alien bodies had been found at the site may have come from a “combination” of facts by eyewitnesses at different times. Namely, people have linked, on the one hand, the mannequins used for the balloon in 1947 and, on the other hand, a plane crash in the 1950s that killed 11 US Air Force personnel; Also another hot air balloon crash in which two air force pilots were injured.

The frames used in the video published by the Facebook page are cut from the movie/series or assembled by software. For example, the shot used at 0:03 of the video, in which we see how the flying object falls, is taken from the TV series The X-Files.

Since 1947, interest in science fiction has been growing in the United States;  many stories about “Area 51”, aliens and unidentified ships have been produced. Films were made, comics and games were created.

Notably, we come across materials about the crash of an unidentified flying object near Roswell in 1947 and related stories in Georgian-language sources as well (1;2).

Ufology is the study of unidentified flying objects, mainly by people who believe in extraterrestrials visiting the Earth. Due to the fact that ufologists cannot prove their opinions with facts and often resort to conspiracy theories, ufology is considered a pseudoscience.
