On March 15, a Facebook profile „სულიერი სამყარო“ (Spiritual world) published a fragment from a Romanian television, dubbed in Russian. The report mentions an employee of an intensive care unit (ICU) at a hospital in Sibiu, Romania, who publicly accused the hospital of improper treatment of coronavirus patients, including tying them to beds and sedating them.

The Facebook profile, in the caption to the video, that the former employee of the hospital acknowledged that patients were murdered by administering sedative drugs with the aim of increasing the coronavirus figures. The caption also mentions: “So were people frightened for a year into believing that COVID kills people”.

The post by “Spiritual world” manipulatively connects the alleged case in Romania to artificially increasing the coronavirus figures. The former employee of Sibiu County Hospital indeed accused the hospital of improper treatment of patients, but the employee did not connect it to blowing up COVID figures. An investigation on misconduct among the administrative staff has been launched.

The TV report, uploaded by “Spiritual world” was aired on DIGI 24, a Romanian TV channel, on March 9. In the report, the former employee of the Sibiu County Hospital ICU speaks anonymously and publicly accuses the hospital. According to the former employee, patients with coronavirus, who had difficulties breathing, were tied to beds and sedated.

The former employee does not claim that the reason behind this was to blow up the coronavirus figures. The former employee mentions that those patients, who did not have relatives or whose relatives were abroad, were especially subject to improper treatment.

According to the Russian dubbing, the former nurse claimed that the main reason why the patients were given sedatives was to prevent them from demanding food or water, or from complaining. The nurse recalls that an elderly patient was put to sleep after she asked for food.

The former employee accused the hospital after another former employee of the hospital came out with a similar accusation. The other former employee, while speaking anonymously to a newspaper, claimed that patients were given sedatives and tied to the bed, so that they would not bother doctors and nurses. The second former employee also mentions that he likely took part in the murder of one of the patients, as he was an employee of the hospital too.

As a Romanian agency agerpres, the Manager of Sibiu County Hospital stated that the nurse, that accused the hospital, only worked in the hospital for a month, and he has not noticed any violations in the ICU management in this period. According to the Manager, it was the nurse who probably committed certain violations.

The Administration of the hospital responded to the accusations. According to the Director Călin Cipăian, tying patients to their beds is a part of protocol. He noted that the aim of tying patients to their beds was to protect them, as the patients who have tubes and probes, feel discomfort, so they might endanger their lives if they try to remove them.

According to the information, published in Romanian media on March 16, the Sibiu Department of Public Health confirmed the existence of violations in the ICU of the Sibiu County Hospital and fined the Head of the Department with 10,000 Romanian leu, and the Director of the patient care unit – with 2,000 leu. In parallel with these sanctions, the Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation on this case, but the results have not been published yet.
