Disinformation by the “Alliance of Patriots”, as if NATO Member States Do not Participate in Afghanistan Mission

On April 17, 2019, the leader of party “Alliance of Patriots”, David Tarkhan-Mouravi, stated on program “End of the day” of TV “Obieqtivi” that thousands of Georgian soldiers participate in Afghanistan mission of NATO, while NATO member states do not send soldiers there.

The statement by David Tarkhan-Mouravi, as if NATO member states do not send soldiers in Afghanistan mission of NATO, is a lie. Twenty-seven out of 29 member states of NATO participate in NATO’s “Resolute Support Mission” in Afghanistan and 15181, which is about 90%, out of 17034 soldiers of the mission are from the NATO member states. Apart from Georgia, 11 other partners of NATO are also involved in the mission.

From January 1, 2015 to the present day, peacekeeping mission “Resolute Support Mission” has been operating in Afghanistan, which aims to assist National security forces of Afghanistan and to strengthen stability in the country.

According to the data for March 2019, 17 034 soldiers participate in the mission, including, 15 181 soldiers from NATO member states, which is 90% of the participants in mission.

From NATO member states, only Canada and France do not participate in the mission.

Eleven other NATO partner states participate in the mission, apart from Georgia.

Twelve NATO partner countries participate in NATO’s “Resolute Support Mission” in Afghanistan, namely: Armenia, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Georgia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Sweden, North Macedonia and Ukraine.

With the most number of soldiers participating in the mission are USA – 8475, Germany – 1300, United Kingdom – 1100. After them, the largest contributors are Italy – 895, Georgia – 870, Romania – 733 and Turkey – 593. (Zolpidem)

Why does Georgia participate in “Resolute Support Mission”?

Participation in peacekeeping missions contributes to the professional development of Georgian military forces and rises the level of compatibility with NATO. In addition, by its active contribution to the missions of NATO, Georgia proves, that it has a potential to be actively involved in peace-building processes and to become a dignified member of NATO.
