On October 16, 2023, the Facebook account “Georgia First” published a post claiming that “the Israeli army killed a Palestinian mother and child while they were sleeping at night.” According to the post, the information is based on the news agency “Reuters.” The post is also accompanied by a video showing several armed men entering the building and shooting a woman.

The claim that the published video shows the killing of civilians by the Israeli army is disinformation. In fact, the video shows footage of the killing of female Israeli soldiers by Hamas fighters on October 7.

The disseminated footage was captured by a camera attached to a now-killed member of the Hamas terrorist group. The video was originally released on October 16 by the Israeli Telegram channel, and as the post says, the footage was taken on October 7, during a surprise attack by Hamas. More specifically, the footage shows terrorists storming a checkpoint on the Gaza-Israel border where Israeli soldiers were stationed. According to the British media (1, 2, 3) Hamas first threw a hand grenade into the room, as a result of which several Israeli female soldiers were wounded and took refuge under a table; however, within a few seconds of entering the room, instead of taking them hostage, terrorists shot them. A second video showing the same event was broadcast on a Telegram channel, where it can also be seen how the wounded women are shot under the table. In this last video, the killers’ voices are clearly heard and it can be established that they are speaking in Arabic, not Hebrew. In addition, the footage shows that they use AK-47 (aka Kalashnikov) brand weapons, which are not part of the Israeli army’s arsenal but are the main automatic weapons of Hamas.

On October 7, 2023, the terrorist group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel, as a result of which the terrorists killed more than 1400 people and kidnapped about 200. Israel responded by declaring war, regaining control of the border and killing up to 1,500 Hamas fighters. According to Palestinian officials, more than 2,800 Palestinians have been killed since Israel bombed the Gaza Strip, a quarter of whom are children.

After the start of the Israel-Hamas war, a number of false claims, as well as photo and video manipulations, were disseminated on social media.
