After the NATO summit held in Vilnius on July 11-12, Georgian and Russian-language (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) Facebook accounts have been actively circulating a photo depicting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Zelenskyy extends his hand to Stoltenberg for a handshake, and Stoltenberg looks at him. Part of the users also published a photo collage with pictures of Zelenskyy shaking hands with those politicians who later left the office.

The photo of Stoltenberg and Zelenskyy was published on the Facebook page POSTV-Analytics with the following description: “Vilnius NATO Summit in one photo.” This photo was also shown in a video posted on the Facebook page ad hoc, discussing the NATO summit.

The disseminated photos are manipulative. The photo that allegedly shows Stoltenberg not shaking Zelenskyy’s hand was taken not at the NATO summit but on April 20 in Kyiv. In fact, at the moment when Zelenskyy extends his hand to Stoltenberg, he looks at the cameras, and as soon as he notices the outstretched hand, he shakes Zelensky’s hand.

Some of the posts create the impression that the photo of Zelenskyy and Stoltenberg was taken at the July 11-12 NATO summit, which is not true. In fact, the photo was taken during Jens Stoltenberg’s visit to Kyiv on April 10, 2023.

""

In addition, the posts create a false impression as if Stoltenberg is not shaking Zelensky’s hand or is hesitating. In fact, the video of the meeting makes it clear that Zelenskyy and Stoltenberg are looking toward the cameras, and when Zelenskyy reached out to Stoltenberg to shake his hand, Stoltenberg was still looking at the cameras, but as soon as he noticed the outstretched hand, he immediately shook Zelensky’s hand.

A photo from the July 11-12 NATO summit in Vilnius also went viral, showing delegates talking to each other, and Zelenskyy standing apart. Russian-language Facebook accounts also shared an altered version of the photo to mock Zelensky.

"" ""

One of the main issues discussed at the Vilnius summit on July 11-12 was Ukraine’s accession to NATO. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confirmed that Ukraine will become a member of the alliance without MAP.
