n 2nd February, “Georgia and the World” published an article, in which it made unjustified generalizations based on abortion statistics in Georgia, and claimed that the existing situation would lead to a physical destruction of the Georgian Nation, which would be accelerated by the process of Visa Liberalization.

Georgia and the World: “Statistics such as these could bring Georgia, as a nation, to eradication… According to experts, the visa liberalization will also stimulate this process”.

According to the data by the National Statistics Office, the registered number of abortion incidents in Georgia is 33 000, in the year 2015. Following the year 2006, the highest indicator was in 2012 –39 000 cases, whereas since, the abortion rate has been decreasing. The lowest number, with 21 000 incidents was recorded in 2006 and 2007.

The association of the topic of abortion to the visa liberalization with the European Union is of speculative nature and does not contain any factual basis. Like indicated in the statistics below, the lowest abortion rate is in North America, followed by West and North Europe, whereas the highest rate is displayed in Russia.

Legislation about abortion regulation could be classified in 4 categories according to various countries.

According to 2014 research by the United Nations:

  • Countries that operate with a restrictive abortion policy experience a significantly higher birth rate, although the countries, where such policies are employed, also see a growth in unsafe abortions.
  • Maternal mortality rates are also notably higher in countries that practice restrictive abortion politics (223 deaths per 100 000 live births), rather than in countries where such restrictions aren’t implemented (77 deaths per 100 000 live births).

Abortion statistics based on countries and regions. Based on a World Health Organisation partner, The Guttmacher Institute data, in the years 2010-2014 the lowest annual indicator (number of abortions per 1000 women aged 15-44) was registered in North America –17, followed by West and Northern Europe with a slight difference –18.

Russia: In Russia, pregnancies are artificially terminated according to women’s will, on the basis of their agreement, before 12 weeks. The country is caracterised by one of the highest indicators according to the number of abortions and is remarkably ahead of European countries’ corresponding figures.

In 2015, on the report of the Russian Federation Statistics Office, there have been 848 180 cases of pregnancy termination. The latter number takes head of statistics in Germany, England and Wales.
