On September 7, Facebook user Maia Tvaltvadze, a frequent spreader of fake news, shared information claiming that by 2025, billionaire Bill Gates would introduce a subcutaneous digital identity card for every child. According to the post, this digital ID would be implanted in children without parental consent.

The same story was spread on September 11 by another frequent disinformation spreader, Facebook user Lado Qartvelishvili. His post stated that the World Economic Forum (WEF) would also be involved in the process of placing subcutaneous digital IDs in children.

Similar information was disseminated by Russian-speaking Facebook accounts.

Digital ID

The claim that Bill Gates plans to implant subcutaneous digital IDs in newborns without parental consent by 2025 is a conspiracy theory and is false. The original source of this information is a media outlet known for spreading disinformation. The digital ID systems developed with support from the Gates Foundation are not subcutaneous.

When sharing the information, these Facebook accounts referred to an article from The People’s Voice. This outlet is known for spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation. “Myth Detector” has previously debunked several claims made by this outlet.

  • What does The People’s Voice article say?

The article, titled “Gates Insider: Digital ID Will Be Embedded Under the Skin of Every Child by 2025” was published on The People’s Voice on September 6. According to the article, Bill Gates had launched a digital identity card project that would be implanted subcutaneously in every child globally, and no parental consent would be required.

The article claims that Bill Gates is urging governments to follow the example of the European Union and India in approving a global digital ID system. In this system, ID chips would be implanted under the skin, and those who refuse to comply with this global order would face punishment and be “excluded from public life.”

The article also claims that by 2025, every newborn will have a digital ID card implanted to ensure that future generations align with Gates’ globalist ambitions.

The People’s Voice does not reference any specific quotes or statements from Bill Gates. Additionally, it does not provide any documents to support the credibility of its claims.

Digital ID

  • What do we know about digital ID systems?

The digital ID system, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was developed in India. It is part of the Gates Foundation’s “Digital Public Infrastructure” project, which also includes digital payment and data exchange systems. The digital ID system facilitates the registration and digital collection of information about individuals, and the holders of such IDs have electronic access to their data. In many countries, digital IDs coexist with traditional identity documents. This system does not offer an ID that is implanted under the skin.

According to the Gates Foundation, millions of people worldwide lack personal identification documents, limiting their access to the economy, healthcare, banking systems, and government programs. A large portion of those without IDs are children, and in low-income countries, every second woman is left without an identity card. The Gates Foundation explains that the digital ID system aims to solve this issue, providing more people with documents suited to the digital age.

Despite the project’s funding, Bill and Melinda Gates do not have the authority to implement this system globally. Decisions on introducing digital identity systems are made by local governments.

Moreover, no open sources provide information suggesting that Bill Gates plans to implant digital IDs under the skin of children by 2025 without parental consent.

  • The operation of digital ID systems in Australia and Estonia

Digital ID systems are implemented in several countries, including Australia. Decisions to introduce such systems are made by governments, not Bill Gates. In Australia, the system was established based on the “Digital ID Act.” According to the Australian government, the digital ID ensures personal information privacy and security while facilitating access to services. Each time information is verified, the digital ID holder gives digital consent. Obtaining a digital ID in Australia is voluntary.

Estonia also operates a digital ID system. For years, every Estonian has been issued a digital ID alongside a physical ID. The digital ID allows users to pay taxes, vote electronically, sign contracts, etc. A chip embedded in the physical ID enables access to its digital counterpart, which users can manage electronically.

In neither Estonia nor Australia, the digital ID system implies that the ID is implanted under the skin.

Several times, misleading information about Bill Gates has been circulated. Claims that Gates intends to “chip” the population gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic, and conspiracy theories around this subject emerged during that time.

In general, manipulative and disinformation claims about Bill Gates often arise, primarily related to his philanthropic work. “Myth Detector” has previously debunked false information about Bill Gates.
