On September 13, anonymous Facebook accounts “Natsi Khvitia” and “Mikheil Ganubazhebeli” posted a video of Nika Gvaramia, leader of the parties “Akhali” and “Coalition for Change.” In the video, Gvaramia is seen saying: “In that genre, I still have memory, and I know how it’s done from the side, from the front, from behind, I don’t know, from the top, from the bottom, etc…” The post captions read: “He knows the Kama Sutra by heart” and “Get on top, Nika, you’re losing your position.”
The video clip has been altered in a way that makes the content unclear, aiming to discredit Nika Gvaramia. In reality, he was speaking to a journalist from the “Mtavari Channel” about how he still remembers journalistic techniques for framing questions to elicit a specific response from an interviewee.
On September 12, Nika Gvaramia was a guest on the “Ghamis Mtavari” program on the “Mtavari Channel.” He discussed current political events, the pre-election environment, and his party’s plans.
During the live broadcast, journalist Dea Mamiseishvili asked Gvaramia about the ruling party “Georgian Dream’s” electoral list. In response, Gvaramia said he wouldn’t comment on anyone on the list except Bidzina Ivanishvili, the party’s founder. He remarked: “When Ivanishvili is number one, that says everything. After that, nothing else matters.” He also noted that he no longer analyzes Ivanishvili’s actions and left that genre behind when he exited television.
The journalist pressed further, asking what Ivanishvili’s position at the top of the list signifies and why the party’s founder had stepped out from behind the scenes.
Gvaramia responded: “I’ll return to the genre I mentioned. In that genre, I still have memory, and I know how things are done from the side, from the front, from behind, I don’t know, from the top, from the bottom, twisting words, manipulating questions to get answers. I still remember that, so this won’t work on me. I don’t care about Ivanishvili’s plans.”
The viral video circulating on social media is this specific segment of Gvaramia’s appearance on “Ghamis Mtavari.” However, it is taken out of context, misleading people into thinking that the politician was speaking about the “Kama Sutra.” This is part of a discreditation campaign against the opposition politician.
In recent months, the spread of disinformation, manipulative content, and video/photo fabrications about opposition politicians has increased. Nika Gvaramia has repeatedly been the target of such discrediting efforts. “Myth Detector” systematically fact-checks misleading claims during the pre-election period.
