Russian Media Outlets Try to Overshadow Skripal Case by Counter-accusations and Patarkatsishvili Case

On October 15, 2018, Channel One, Russia’s largest state-run TV channel, aired the story by Timur Siraziev titled “The British government extends the rights for its Special Forces to kill and torture throughout the world.” During the entire story, the author tries to link high-profile murders of former KGB agents, attempted murders, as well as deaths of some persons associated with Russia, including Boris Berezovsky and Badri Patarkatsishvili, to MI5, UK’s domestic counterintelligence and security agency.

Marshalpress Manipulates with the HRW report on Drug Policy

On August 14, 2018, the online newspaper Marshallpress published news entitled “HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH’s dangerous appeal to the government that has outraged the society”. The article states that Human Rights Watch asks the Georgian government to decriminalize personal use of all drugs and acquisition/possession of a small quantity for personal use. Marshallpress notes that the appeal was followed by negative feedback from the majority of social networks users.

Colchic-Iberian Order Uses One-Sided Story Aired by GDS to Incite Armenophobia

On August 10, the Colchic-Iberian Order (კოლხურ-იბერიული ორდენი) posted on its Facebook page a story aired by 20/30 program of GDS TV on January 22, 2016. The following caption was added to the story: “Another scandal: The Armenians labeled Daisi as an Armenian wedding dance.” The story aired by GDS TV referred to the video uploaded on YouTube in 2016, featuring a Georgian dance Daisi performed by the U.S-based Gevorkian Dance Academy and mislabeling it as an Armenian wedding dance. The story has been shared 4,200 times and seen 267,000 times (as of August 17). In addition, the majority of comments made by users were of Armenophobic nature and contained hate speech.

On August 15, two news agencies with similar names – Timenews.ge and Timesnews.ge published identical materials about citizens of Turkey allegedly beating up an Orthodox priest in Batumi. Articles, titled “Look what Turks did in Batumi – this is too much, they beat up a priest” (Timenews.ge) and “This cannot be forgiven!!! Turkish citizens physically abused a priest” (Timesnews.ge)
