On November 6, a pro-Trump Georgian Facebook page “ჩვენ ვართ” (We Are) posted a video with a caption involving U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s quotes: “We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.”

Biden’s remarks have been taken out of context and are spread manipulatively. In fact, Biden talks not about the voter fraud organization, but about the voter protection program, which, according to him, is the largest program in presidential election history.

  • Biden’s interview and its spread in the United States

A 24-second video is a fragment from the interview with Biden on Crooked Media’s “Pod Save America,” a progressive political podcast hosted by former aides to President Barack Obama. One of them asked Biden what was his message to the folks who have not yet voted or who have already voted.

Biden gave a lengthy answer, where he reviewed the voter protection program his campaign has launched to protect ballots, noting that the Republicans are doing everything they can “to make it harder for people to vote, particularly people of color to vote.” He also called on voters to use the website iwillvote.com run by the Democrats, as well as to call at his campaign hotline if they had any problems or doubts, where they would be assisted.

It is clear that Biden is talking about the voter protection methods; however, only a 24-second fragment was spread from his lengthy answer, where he mentions “voter fraud organization.” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, President Donald Trump, his son, Eric Trump and various pro-Republican pages posted this fragment of the video on their personal social media accounts.

According to Snopes, a fact-checking website, Biden left open his remarks to possible misinterpretation, but crucially, only if that phrase was presented outside its original context, which the Trump campaign did.

USA Today writes that media outlets from both sides agree the claim about Biden confessing wide-scale voter fraud is false. Fox News notes in its article from October 25 that Biden may have been referring to his campaign’s massive “election protection program” he had talked about in other interviews as well.

Talking about the Obama administration’s efforts “before this”, according to Reuters, Biden was likely referring to the former president’s strategy of challenging voting laws it viewed as discriminating by race, an effort to counter a 2013 Supreme Court ruling that freed states from the strictest federal oversight.

  • The spread of a 24-second video on Georgian social media

The 24-second fragment of Biden’s interview without any context or description appeared in Georgia only on November 6 when it was posted by Facebook page “We Are,” whose “About us” section is empty, though its cover photo reads: “Georgians For Trump.” The organization with the same name unites pro-government experts, as well as ultranationalist activists.

The video was also shared by Facebook page დედაქალაქი (Capital).

Later, the video was shared to two public groups “კონსერვატორები” (Conservatives) and “ალტ-ინფოს მხარდამჭერების ჯგუფი” (Group of Supporters of Alt-Info).

It is worth noting that on October 23, Facebook removed the accounts connected to Georgian far-right group Alt-Info. Myth Detector has revealed Alt-Info’s manipulative materials containing hate speech multiple times.
