On July 30-31, Georgian (1;2;3;4;5,6;7) and Russian-language (1;2) Facebook accounts spread a quote attributed to American director and actor Mel Gibson regarding the Paris Olympics. According to the quote, Gibson condemned the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics, saying:  “he Olympic ceremony in France mocked my faith. Who do they think they are that they can do this? Giving the gold medal to a biological male in women’s swimming had already made me boycott the games, but this offense has sealed the deal. Who conceived & designed that display?”

The quote attributed to Mel Gibson about the Paris Olympics is fabricated. No such statement by the actor can be found in open sources. Additionally, the information’s original source is an Italian archbishop, who writes that the quote was sent to him by Gibson and references a page managed not by Gibson, but by his fans.

The mentioned quote about the Paris Olympics attributed to the actor was first published by Italian Catholic Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò on social network X (formerly Twitter) on July 30. In the post, he writes that he received the statement directly from the actor as a message and references an X account created in Gibson’s name. It should be noted that the account does not belong to the movie director. Its description and pinned post indicate that it is a fan page, and the actor is not registered on any social network.
