On May 30-31, 2023, Russian-language Facebook accounts  (1234) disseminated a photo of the cover of the Spanish satirical magazine EL JUEVES. The cover of the magazine depicts a corpse with an Ukrianian army helmet and worms, saying “What counteroffensive? We’re not done eating it yet!” The caricature refers to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s claim that Ukraine is getting ready for a counterattack.

The caricature circulating under the name of EL JUEVES is fabricated. The latest issue of the magazine was released on June 6 and the design does not match with the one disseminated by the Russian-language Facebook accounts. Similar caricature cannot be found on the covers of the special issues of “EL JUEVES” either.

  • The design of the EL JUEVES’s cover with the issue number 2,388 is different from the one circulating online

The top part of the cover page disseminated by the Russian-language Facebook accounts features the issue number 2,388. The magazine with the same issue number was released on June 6 not in May but the design and the barcode of the cover is different. The cover of the original version says: These Meetings were easier when there weren’t so many things to get hooked on.

Social media pages of EL JUEVES (1, 2) allow the readers to view the magazine covers. Similar caricatures referring Zelenskyy’s claim that Ukraine is getting ready for a counterattack can not be found nor in the previous versions of the magazine neither in the special editions.  All previous versions of the magazine are available on the official webpage of EL JUEVES.

Fabricating the covers of the different Western outlets is the widespread method of Russian propaganda. Fake covers of satirical magazines in the context of the war in Ukraine have been fact-checked by “Myth Detector” in the past as well. For more details, see the articles:
