On July 15, a Georgian-language Facebook account disseminated information about the alleged death of a NATO general in Ukraine.

Identical information was also spread by Russian-speaking Facebook users (1,2,3,4) in March 2024. An article published by rg.ru on March 27 claimed that NATO General Marczak might have died as a result of an Iskander missile strike in Chasiv Yar. According to Tsargrad.tv, Adam Marczak “died of natural causes” following the Iskander strike.

The information about the death of a NATO general in Ukraine is false. Polish General Marczak died of natural causes in Mons, Belgium, in March 2024.

Reports about the NATO general’s death in Ukraine were also circulated through Russian Telegram channels in March 2024. Although these posts included a statement from the Polish Armed Forces Command, which stated that Marczak died of natural causes in Belgium, the authors still claimed that the cause of death was an Iskander missile in Chasiv Yar, Ukraine.

The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command announced Marczak’s death on March 26, 2024. The statement mentioned that Brigadier General Adam Marczak died on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. He was the head of the ALTHEA headquarters of the EU Operational Command in Mons, where he had been serving since September 2023. The mission operates under the Dayton Agreement, cooperating with authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to ensure security. The ALTHEA headquarters is located in Mons, Belgium, where, according to official statements, Marczak died.

Marczak’s death in Mons is also confirmed by photos published on social media by the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command. On April 5, the department released photos taken during the ceremony of placing the coffin in an airplane in Belgium. Four hours later, photos showing the coffin’s arrival in Poland were published on the same page. According to the Estonian fact-checking platform Delfi, the photos show a Polish Air Force plane with a unique identification number – 48D847. By tracking the plane’s movement, it was determined that the plane took off from Poland on the morning of April 5, landed in Brussels, stayed for several hours, and then flew to Warsaw. Marczak was buried with military honors in the Polish capital six days later.

Information about the death of a Polish general in Ukraine due to a Russian missile strike was also debunked by Polish fact-checking platforms. FakeHunter contacted the deputy spokesperson of the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command, who confirmed that Brigadier General Adam Marczak died on March 26, 2024, in Mons, Belgium. The same source told Konkret24 that the information about General Adam Marczak’s death in Ukraine is false.

It is noteworthy that since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian propaganda has actively disseminated reports about the elimination of NATO and US officers in Ukraine. Claims about NATO or US military personnel being captured or killed in Ukraine aim to portray the US and NATO as official parties to the war. Similar claims have been repeatedly fact-checked by “Myth Detector” since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. For more details, see the following articles:
