On November 12, a Facebook user Gio Gio published a photo in a public Facebook group „ჩემი გორი ✔“ (My Gori ✔) displaying information about Levofloxacin with Latin letters. The post claims that it cures COVID-19. The photo reads: “Folks, see Levofloxacin – the first drug that cures corona!!!! (ten tables needed in total)”. The author of the post calls on the public in the post description to start taking the drug as soon as possible and spread the information in a timely manner. The post by Gio Gio had more than 8,200 shares as of November 16.

The widespread information that Levofloxacin allegedly cures COVID-19 is false. In fact, this is an antibacterial drug. COVID-19, on the other hand, is not a bacterial infection, but a virus. Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not confirm the existence of any drug that cures the coronavirus.

About Levofloxacin

This is an antibacterial drug. COVID-19, on the other hand, is a virus, not a bacterial disease. The description of the drug reads that it is used for treating respiratory tract, throat, ear, nose, bladder, skin, soft tissue, and genital infections. The drug is effective against chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis, as well as against prostatitis and urogenital chlamydiosis.

The drug is manufactured by Mepro Pharmaceuticals in India and is only sold in Georgia through the prescription with a Form #3.

Medicinal treatment of COVID-19

According to WHO, there is currently no drug against COVID-19 and clinical trials are still in progress in this regard. Moreover, the organization calls on everyone not to resort to self-treatment in case the symptoms of the coronavirus start to show.

Drugs used for treating COVID-19 infection vary by country. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Remdesivir for treating the coronavirus. As for the United Kingdom, Dexamethasone has been used by medical staff for treating patients since the start of the pandemic.

National Center for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia (NCDC) officially stated on October 24 that the Center does not recommend any drug for treating COVID-19 infection or for its prevention. According to the same statement, several fraudulent calls have been made in the name of the Center and the Lugar Lab to the citizens, claiming that the drug they offer are recommended by these agencies. NCDC called on the citizens to report these phone numbers to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
