On June 27, a photo of a journalist for the Mtavari TV channel, Diana Jojua, was posted on the Facebook page Politics with the caption, “Big shame! The Georgian Dream bribed UEFA to make Georgian people happy for the elections.” From the comments below the post, it is clear that Facebook users mistook the caption on the photo for words said by Diana Jojua.
The quote attributed to Diana Jojua is fabricated. The journalist of the Mtavari channel did not say in the news program that the Georgian Dream bribed UEFA to make the Georgian people happy for the elections.
The Georgian national team played its last group match at the European Football Championship against Portugal on June 26. Georgia defeated its opponent 2-0 and advanced to the round of 16.
The day after the match, on June 27, Diana Jojua and Paata Iakobashvili opened the news program on the Mtavari channel with a story about the victory of the Georgian national team, but neither of them said that the Georgian Dream had bribed UEFA.
At the beginning of the news program on June 27, Diana Jojua mentioned the success of the Georgian national team at EURO 2024 twice:
“The great football celebration continues. Georgia has reached the round of 16, and the match with Portugal is the stage that already passed. With their brilliant performance, our team has proved that they can beat undoubtedly great teams too. By scoring two goals, Georgian footballers once again showed the whole world that the Georgian national team is a team of the highest European level and that Georgia is a worthy and dangerous opponent for everyone.” 1:34
“Nothing is impossible. The Georgian team proved it on the football field. Having beaten one of the favorites not only in the match or group but in the entire championship, our national team proved that it is a worthy participant in the European Championship. With its decisive, technically and tactically correct game, Georgia again made the whole world talk and gave food for thought to its future rival. From today our footballers are preparing for the match with Spain, and they know that nothing is impossible.” 8:20
